Occupational Therapy
Occupational therapy (OT) is defined as the “art and science of enabling engagement in everyday living through occupation” (Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists, CAOT). In this field, the term “occupation” refers to anything that occupies your time.
So, what does this mean for children? OTs can assess their function and apply interventions to help children successfully participate in life. This means we might help a child with their ability to play, do extracurricular activities, play sports, participate in school, complete hygiene tasks, and anything else that is meaningful to them. And we do all of this through targeting their underlying skills of gross and fine motor skills, sensory processing, executive functioning, and emotional regulation.
If your child has difficulty with:
- Toileting
- Dressing themselves
- Eating
- Having appropriate emotional reactions
- Has clear sensory sensitivities or aversions
- Making and keeping friends
- Staying organized
- Holding a pencil
- Writing
Then they may benefit from working with an OT. If you’re still unsure, please get in touch, and our OTs will happily do a complimentary 15-minute phone call to determine if OT is right for you and your child.
